LIFE Blends Bossa Nova and Boom Bap

Oliver Patterson

LIFE by PROKLAIM mixes several different genres in a way that feels authentic to each of them but also unique in its styling. From bossa nova to neo-soul to Boom Bap, there is a sense of respect for each genre PROKLAIM has utilised to build their sound. That respect translates into a unique sonic landscape that feels both effortless and meticulously crafted.

The mixture of Boom Bap and bossa nova was the most shocking to me upon first listen. Not only do these two genres not often get paired together, but the laid-back steeze of bossa nova seems at odds with the snappy funk of Boom Bap. However, LIFE subverted my expectations. The bossa nova beat added a beautiful counter-rhythm that brought energy and swing to the composition, connecting it even further to the jazz roots of Boom Bap. Seeing these two worlds come full circle and enrich each other’s influence on such a great track felt astonishing to experience as a listener.

The vocal delivery is smooth and shows a range from PROKLAIM. In the verses, the delivery is in a high register, articulating the narrative of progress and growth while flowing seamlessly with the beat. The concept of limiting the use of technology and focusing on improving yourself feels more relevant than ever. In the choruses, the vocals drop to a deeper register, allowing for a greater sense of sonic diversity and enriching this track’s complex tapestry with contrast to the high tones within the instrumental.

The bass guitar adds another layer of funk to the song. Its marching consistency provides a through line that keeps the listener tethered to the track. It also interacts with the melody beautifully, emphasising trills and motifs in the ethereal synth with its grounded texture,

LIFE’s positive message about the importance of frame of mind and its meticulous, genre-bending makes this track shine.
