The Dinosaur’s Skin Review

Oliver Patterson

The Dinosaur’s Skin establishes their developing tone with this brilliant new alternative dream pop track. Full of sunbleached melancholy, this nostalgic banger walks the line beautifully between happy and sad. The Dinosaur’s Skin’s signature mellow vocals are on display throughout, going from strength to strength, stretching and moulding the lyrics to fit within their lethargic but deeply emotionally potent style. The track bounces tonally between two major melodic devices. The fuzzy, deep bassline is the lower end of this register. It is full of expressive distortion and rhythmic bounce. Its malleable, playful, rhythmic texture contrasts with the beautiful, high register synth, the other side of this balance. Both aspects feel like they interact with the melody expressed through the vocals. It is this intersection that makes the project feel unique, as every characteristic interacts with every other, creating these beautiful moments of harmony and dissonance, connecting the song to this theme of transience and uncertainty through the ebb and flow from dissonance to harmony.

Speaking of which, the vocal harmonies are particularly impressive, adding levity to what is, at its core, a track about uncertainty and the challenges of change. The drums hit you right in the gut, adding depth to the high register aspects of the tracks. With the ethereal nature of the vocals and the breezy guitar, the drums and bass guitar add sonic diversity, affecting the sonic texture of the song as well as the rhythm. The spaced-out, reverb-filled drumming reminded me of Mac DeMarco or Take Me Where Your Heart Is by Q. The vocals speed up and slow down throughout the verses and choruses, which isn’t a common trait in this style of laid-back dream pop. This, again, connects the track to this theme of change.

The video is also excellent, with a psychedelic combo of prehistoric creatures and modern locations. It’s really fun to see the dinos interact with the dinosaur theme park and it also harkens back to this theme of change, core to the track.

The Dinosaur’s Skin is one of my new favourite artists, and it is brilliant to witness them put their sonic signature on another brilliant track. They’ve put their spin on a crowded sub-genre, delivering a beautiful track with a unique timbre and a relatable, melancholic narrative.

Salem by MATT TARKA is an evocative and genre-fluid listening experience, capturing the ease of indie rock while exploring the psychedelic influences of artists like The Velvet Underground. Standing on the shoulders of musical giants, they still put their own spin on the tonal palette. The acoustic guitar feels like a guiding light, defining the […]

Sinking/Floating

Sinking/Floating MAIJAH is an alternative pop power pairing that works like strawberries and cream, delving into the duality of the human experience. As we go through change there are these moments of extreme highs and lows and sometimes the only difference between these states is the way we feel, as opposed to anything external. The […]

A Different Kind

A Different Kind by Social Gravy does the impossible by creating a project that delivers on a deep, emotionally resonant meaning while also having a catchy tune that appeals as much on the first listen as it does on the thirty first. If anything, this project ages like fine wine. Different tones and texture become […]
