Twist of Fate

Oliver Patterson

Twist of Fate by TAHANI is a beautiful and heartwarming track about healing your inner child and finding a constant in your ever changing relationship with your father. There is something far more important in this track beyond melody and rhythm. This kind of meaningful music is both cathartic for the person writing it and can also be really helpful for people going through similar experiences. Through hearing the music, they can find a new perspective on the challenges they’re going through. It is this mutually beneficial exchange of experience through the medium of music which, as a reviewer, is a privilege to listen to. The vocal performance is heartfelt. There is a level of candid honesty in every line that draws the listener in more and more.

The cadence is slow and gentle while the delivery is soft. It creates this intimate tone that contrasts the bright, bold energy of the guitar. The guitar plays several different roles throughout the composition. In the verses, it serves as this beacon of shiny timbre, rhythmic control, and energy. It drives the pace of the track, establishing a level of separation from the quiet, introspective verses. The guitar also has a more melodic and explorative side, shown in the quiet point of the verses. The lead guitar builds these runs and embellishments on top of the melody, adding depth and richness to the track’s overall sonic texture. This feels more present in the verses. The quieter tone allows for the more subtle melodic aspects, like the arpeggiated guitar sections, to truly shine. The track also has this ethereal synth part that comes in towards the end. It feels symbolic of our protagonist healing themself and rediscovering how they feel about their relationship with their father. This tone adds a level of evolution to the track and also perfectly captures this sense of realisation and discovery with its joyous tone. Overall, this track manages to be sonically beautiful, heartwarming, and deeply meaningful at the same time.

Salem

Salem by MATT TARKA is an evocative and genre-fluid listening experience, capturing the ease of indie rock while exploring the psychedelic influences of artists like The Velvet Underground. Standing on the shoulders of musical giants, they still put their own spin on the tonal palette. The acoustic guitar feels like a guiding light, defining the […]

Sinking/Floating MAIJAH is an alternative pop power pairing that works like strawberries and cream, delving into the duality of the human experience. As we go through change there are these moments of extreme highs and lows and sometimes the only difference between these states is the way we feel, as opposed to anything external. The […]

A Different Kind

A Different Kind by Social Gravy does the impossible by creating a project that delivers on a deep, emotionally resonant meaning while also having a catchy tune that appeals as much on the first listen as it does on the thirty first. If anything, this project ages like fine wine. Different tones and texture become […]
