Sinking/Floating

Sinking/Floating MAIJAH is an alternative pop power pairing that works like strawberries and cream, delving into the duality of the human experience. As we go through change there are these moments of extreme highs and lows and sometimes the only difference between these states is the way we feel, as opposed to anything external. The nice thing about the poetic way the tracks are written is that they become deeply personal to MAIJAH while also being universal to many people’s experience of the world. Anyone can relate to phases of changing emotion, folding and morphing back and forth.

In this specific pair, MAIJAH is exploring the ebbs and flows of ADHD and depression, switching between intense activity and hopeless stagnation, as well as the stresses that come with both. I mention this often but the sense of shared experience through music is relevant here. Projects like this feel particularly meaningful because they allow for this symbiotic sense of growth between the listener and the musician. The musician finds catharsis in bringing their own thoughts into reality whereas a listener going through similar challenges can find a sense of peace in having their reality explored by someone else. These two aspects alone make this track worth your time. It’s this beautiful, cathartic self expression on one end and a musical salve on the other. The first track Sinking has this declining musical register, matching the narrative aspect of sinking. It maintains a sense of r&b energy while communicating this lethargic sense of tone. The second song utilises this staccato rhythmic aspect to communicate a heightened sense of energy and possibly a slight anxiety. The tracks feel like two sides of the same coin. However, there are some sonic consistencies that tie the pieces together, like an excellent vocal performance from MAIJAH. The delivery is silky smooth and feels just as comfortable in the high end of the register as it does in the lower, more slow end of the tracks. This is an important and relevant project that deserves your attention.

Salem

Salem by MATT TARKA is an evocative and genre-fluid listening experience, capturing the ease of indie rock while exploring the psychedelic influences of artists like The Velvet Underground. Standing on the shoulders of musical giants, they still put their own spin on the tonal palette. The acoustic guitar feels like a guiding light, defining the […]

A Different Kind

A Different Kind by Social Gravy does the impossible by creating a project that delivers on a deep, emotionally resonant meaning while also having a catchy tune that appeals as much on the first listen as it does on the thirty first. If anything, this project ages like fine wine. Different tones and texture become […]
