Remember Captures Melancholic Anguish in an Alt-Pop Package.

Remember by ROBBARTI Is an indie, alt-pop track that uses harmonies beautifully to create a psychedelic and unique tone that stands as a cut above its contemporaries in the indie-pop genre. The track has an overall tone of reminiscing, the vocalist is reaching out to their muse, asking them to remember these important moments throughout their relationship, from the music feeling like fire to moments where things begin to fade. There is a subtle desperation in the repetition of remembering at the song’s core.

Through the slow evolution of the song’s narrative, we begin to understand why the vocalist is focusing on the past. Something has gone wrong and the relationship is damaged.

With this in mind, I initially struggled with the choice to give the vocalists this overarching harmony that follows from beginning to end. This feels disconnected from the tone of isolation and longing for rekindling a lost relationship. The harmony gives the piece a sense of togetherness and unity which could imply that the relationship has the opportunity to get back on track. There is a connection between the choice of harmony and the theme of a lost relationship; however perhaps intentionally, this has been left as an enigma throughout the song.

I mention the harmonies because they are a key part of what gives this song its sound. They follow the lead vocals, providing a high register contrast to them and coaxing out the emotional cadence of the lead throughout the song. It follows just behind the lead vocals as well, giving the track these sonic tracers that echo behind the melody. They make the track feel distorted in a beautiful way, almost as if the memories are being twisted and misremembered every time the vocalist begins reminiscing.

It’s the connection between the track’s tone and its narrative that gives it a unique and powerful sound.
