That Girl Review

Oliver Patterson

That Girl by LIMITLESS is an indie pop experience, exploring the concept of love through the notion of a perfect person. The song idolises its muse. This felt like a self-aware choice to draw attention to how we perceive those we love, putting them on a pedestal and smoothing out all of their flaws to turn them into the perfect person. The repetition of “that girl” keeps the listener separate from this perfect person. That distance manifests in the sense of longing across the song.

The vocals are a real highlight, soaring above the rest of the composition, they lead from the front directing the melody and shaping the narrative. The execution is immaculate with excellent breath control and melodic delivery. On top of this, the emotional resonance of the lyrics comes through. They felt so connected, it amplified the message of the music and immersed me in the narrative of the composition. The percussion was another standout aspect. The use of the shaker to add fills and pacing to the rhythm helped to keep the track lively and smooth while the marching drum beat provided the backbone for the rest of the song to grow around. The deep bass of the drum hits you right in the gut as a listener adding tonal separation to the light and airy sound of the melody. The guitar builds the melody, working in tandem with the vocals; it uses trills and dramatic runs to heighten the mood of the song overall. The vocals and guitar feel in sync, halting at certain points of the composition together, using silence as a tool. The silence allows the music to be more impactful when it comes back in by providing contrast. As a listener, one gets a sense of the group’s deep musical chemistry. That sense of flow is infectious and makes the tune that much more enjoyable to listen to.

Standing on the shoulders of musical giants, they still put their own spin on the tonal palette. The acoustic guitar feels like a guiding light, defining the […]

As we go through change there are these moments of extreme highs and lows and sometimes the only difference between these states is the way we feel, as opposed to anything external. The […]

A Different Kind

A Different Kind by Social Gravy does the impossible by creating a project that delivers on a deep, emotionally resonant meaning while also having a catchy tune that appeals as much on the first listen as it does on the thirty first. If anything, this project ages like fine wine. Different tones and texture become […]
