Flaunt You Review

Flaunt You by ROBIN SWANN is a bold yet emotionally compelling indie pop track detailing the queer experience of falling in love outside of the mainstream and traditional expectation of heterosexual romance. The phrase “Flaunt You” is an incredibly bold statement within the track, suggesting they don’t want to simply be in love, they want to share that experience in love with the world. The bravery they express through the lyrics is matched by the melody. Ebbing and flowing, the track swells in the choruses with a driving synth backing up the ethereal high notes that make up the track’s musical tapestry. Flaunt You falls into a lineage of incredibly powerful tracks about accepting how your love might be different to others.

Siegfried by Frank Ocean is one of our favourite tracks of all time at Musictaste and another powerful example of finding queer love. The phrase “I’m not brave” is an iconic example of hiding how one feels even from themselves. Flaunt You also struggles with identity throughout the track. The example of not wanting to disappoint your mother when dating by changing her expectation of who you’re bringing home feels like a prime example of this. Swann’s lyricism is so powerful she explains her apathy towards dating other people incredibly candidly. The lyrics feel like a true train of thought. We get an unedited look at their thought process as this idea of true love gains momentum and confidence. It feels like the singer realises that doing anything other than what makes them truly happy would be selling themselves short and with that in mind, they decide to pursue the partner that really matters to them. I love the high register synths that punctuate this mental journey. It feels like they perfectly represent those thoughts building in our singers mind. The delivery is expressive and the execution is flawless, you get the sense that the vocalist is giving a part of themselves with the lyrics, not just sung but felt. It’s a privilege to hear such a raw and candid expression of personal growth and I recommend you give it a listen for yourself.
